D.I.Y. | OMBRE POLO

December 7, 2013

The ombre trend may have come and gone but my penchant for this lovely fashion statement drives me to do even more Do-it-yourself projects. The best part about DIY projects is coming up with your very own unique piece of clothing at minimal cost.

I came across this polo and I found it a bit too normal so I decided to bleach it. Before doing anything that involves bleach, I always make it a point to use gloves, work in an open space, and gather all my materials beforehand. Bleach is harmful to the skin, eyes, and nose so it’s best to take the necessary precautions.

Step 1: Prepare your work space and gather your materials

Things you’ll need…

Denim polo/top

Bleach

Water

Distilled White Vinegar

Bucket/ Tub/ Sink

Rubber Gloves

Step 2: Mix bleach solution (½ bleach, ½ water) in the bucket and submerge the denim polo (any way you want)

Leave an allowance of 2 inches because the bleach will run up from where it is being soaked (I learned this the hard way). Let it soak for 10-15 minutes.

*leaving the polo/top in the bleach solution for too long will destroy the denim

DON’T FORGET TO WEAR RUBBER GLOVES! bleach can stain clothes and burn the skin — protect yourself.

Step 3: Transfer the denim polo to the vinegar solution (water + a little white vinegar) to stop the bleaching process then rinse well with cold water

Step 4: Hang it to dry then toss it in the wash

Once dry, toss the ombre polo in the washing machine — ON ITS OWN. Do not wash it with other clothes because the bleach will stain the rest of the clothes in the wash. After washing the polo on its own, it can be washed with other clothes.

Voila! that’s how to create your very own ombre polo! Well, that’s it for this post. I would love to see how your DIY ombre polos turn out, so why not try it out?

P.S. send me pictures!

xoxo.
